A WIOMSA Marine Research Grant up to $6000



1. Background

Marine conservation in the WIO region is expanding, with countries strengthening Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), supporting Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), and advancing blue economy strategies. However, sustainable financing remains a challenge. This call seeks to build the evidence base for long-term marine conservation financing.


2. Purpose

This thematic call aims to:

Quantify marine conservation financing needs and gaps

Assess revenue potential and diversification strategies

Examine governance and institutional design for durable financing

Evaluate financial resilience and link to conservation outcomes

Strengthen the analytical foundation for coordinated, long-term marine conservation financing


3. Priority Research Themes

Applicants may focus on:

a. Quantifying the Financing Gap

b. Revenue Diversification and Stability

c. Governance and Institutional Design

d. Coordinated and Multi-Level Financing

e. Linking Finance to Conservation Outcomes

f. Equity and Investment Credibility


4. Eligibility

Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) or ongoing Master’s/PhD students in WIO countries

Research aligned with this thematic call

Commence fieldwork before 31 May 2026


5. Grant Support

Maximum award: USD 6,000

Fieldwork period: up to 6 months

Supports field-based research costs only


6. Application Process

Stage 1: Concept Note (3 pages, deadline 30 March 2026)

Stage 2: Full Proposal (5 pages, deadline 30 April 2026, by invitation only)
